📚 Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is an inherited genetic disorder in which clusters of cysts develop primarily within your kidneys, causing your kidneys to enlarge and lose function over time.
🧬 Abnormal genetics and DNA mutations cause PKD Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) 👨🏻 Develops more often at 30-40 years of age 🚶🏾♂️One parent has the mutated gene 👶🏻🚫 Each child has 50% chance to get the mutation Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) 🧒🏻 Develops more often in childhood 👫 Both parents must have the mutation 👶🏻👶🏼👶🏾🚫 Each child has a 25% change to get the mutation Symptoms 🔹 High blood pressure 🔹 Chronic back pain 🔹 Pregnancy complications 🔹 Urinary tract infection/ Kidney failure Diagnosis ◾ Ultrasound ◾ CT scan ◾ MRI scan Management 🔸 Take blood pressure medications as prescribed 🔸 Low salt diet with lots of fluids intake 🔸 Maintain healthy weight and exercise regularly 🔸 No smoking and limit alcohol use
